La Grande Bouffe

I finally got around to watching 'La Grande Bouffe'. It was actually totally incredible - as you can see by the vast amount of screen caps I was compelled to take. Four grown men choose death by food, by gorging themselves on banquet after banquet in a ramshackle French country home. It's a visually opulent film, despite the protagonists choosing one of the most humiliating ways to die. You just can't tear your eyes away from the disgustingly beautiful excess of bodily fluids and fervor.

I was reminded of Věra Chytilová's 'Daisies' in regard to the focus upon guilty pleasures, unbridled appetite and letting nothing get in the way of achieving pure sensory ecstasy. Each film entertains the gratification of desires. And, not surprisingly, the parties in both films meet similar fates.
